Hermeticism

Hermeticism is a set of philosophical and religious beliefs based primarily upon the writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, who was put forth as a wise sage and Egyptian Priest, and who was commonly seen as the Egyptian god Thoth.

Hermeticism is a Greco-Roman / Egyptian philosophy that instructs the initiate to find hidden wisdom.  That wisdom is usually hidden within.  Not all Hermeticists take a religious approach, as some consider it to be a philosophical system only.  In Hermetic religion, the supreme deity, or principle, is referred to as The All or The Is.  Many Hermeticists also and their beliefs with mystical ideas with other religions, such as Bhuddism, Judaism, and Paganism.  Many hold that all great religions have equivalent mystical truths at their core.

Hermetic teachings can be summed in three areas of expertise:

Alchemy, which focuses on the operation of the Sun and IS NOT the changing of lead into gold, but applies more directly to the investigation of one's spiritual life and material existence through the mysteries of birth, death, and rebirth.

Astrology, which focuses on the operation of the Moon and the stars.  Hermetic philosophy claims that wisdom and knowledge of the whole of the Universe can be taught to Man in the movements of the planets and the stars.

Theurgy, the control of spirits.  There are mainly two different types of Theurgy.  The first is the Goetia and the second is Enochian.  'Theurgy' translates to 'the science art of divine works', and is the practical aspect of Hermetic alchemy.  Furthermore, alchemy is seen as the key to Theurgy, the ultimate goal of which is to become united with the divine consciousness.

Hermeticism encompasses both pantheonism and polytheism within its belief structure.  It also subscribes to the notion that other beings exist, such as gods, angels, ascended masters, and elementals.

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW!

These words circulate throughout the occult and magickal circles, and they come from Hermetic texts.  It is usually used in the sense of the microcosm and the macrocosm.  The microcosm is ones self, and the macrocosm is the Universe.

Lord Jacobus comes from a Hermetic pre-Gardnerian tradition that broke off from the Order of the Golden Dawn.  It was known as Coven of the Nile.  The tradition focused on Hermeticism using High Magick and Sex Magick.  Coven of the Nile used Egyptian deities and magick from the Lesser Key of Solomon.
