Why Skyclad

Definition: Skyclad means to be naked, specifically during ritual.

Some believe that clothing interferes with the natural energies of magick, and that being naked brings you closer to the Earth.

There are many reasons why a Wiccan might choose to go skyclad.
" And ye shall be naked in your Rites"

The reasons for going skyclad are many and varied:
· Clothing blocks energy (according to some people)
· Being nude represents the deep trust between coven members
· Lack of robes places all members as equals
· Shows the level of commitment to the Craft and one's coven
· There is nothing sexual about performing rituals in the nude

The original reference to the practice of skyclad rituals comes from the 1897 text by Charles Leland, "Aradia, Gospel of the Witches". It's reflected again in the more modern version, "The Charge of the Goddess", by Doreen Valiente. The line reads: "...as a sign that you are free, you shall be naked in your rites."

In traditional Gardnerian Wicca, Skyclad is as natural a part of their craft practice as it is for others to be robed. Most Gardnerian and related traditions carry on many or all of their magical operations skyclad. Some believe this allows magical energy to 'flow' unrestricted by clothing. Often it is believed a more honest way to appear before the Gods, or to provide a psychological demarcation between ordinary and magical consciousness, which is also accomplished with robes and ritual dress in other traditions.

While the term itself was probably devised for the practice by Gardner (the term itself predates him but was unrelated to witchcraft), the idea of witches performing rituals in the nude stems from ancient popular superstition and may have some historical basis
